NABH is a system which helps improve quality of the product by twofold. This accreditation system is used all over India in the health care sector. This system reduces risk to a great extent and sees to it that all aspects of health care are up to date.

The Origins

It isn’t a hidden fact that one needs to closely address the needs of the current healthcare system. India lags behind as far as health care is concerned. It is necessary to regulate and inspect health care facilities in India. It is with this vision that NABH functions.


NABH stands for the National Accreditation Board for Hospitals and Health Care providers. This board has been put into operation with help from the Ministry of Health, stakeholders, consumers, government and functions independently.

The Need for NABH

It is the core of the health care system to have an NABH accreditation and there are more than enough reasons for the same. It is essential for the betterment of the health care system. As of now, the policies in place aren’t sufficient to regulate to the requisite level of quality of the health care system. It also cannot prevent leniency in implementation of methods. There are countless persistent problems in the healthcare system that remains ignored. On top of that, there is no dearth of malpractices in the healthcare sector. Thus, NABH has been introduced with a view to reduce all these deficiencies that are glaring in the health sector. The NABH aims to ensure a safer and cleaner health sector to its patrons. It is also necessary to make the health sector an error free one. Thus, the NABH isn’t just an accreditation; it shall make sure that the health care providers take care to follow the minimal requisite standards.


The Requisites

One has to be capable of certain standards and qualities in order to have an NABH accreditation. These have been formulated by the technical committee of the board. One has to maintain a certain kind of quality in their services in order to be eligible for an NABH accreditation. If there is room for improvement in the prescribed qualities then, one shall not get the NABH accreditation. These standards are applicable to the following health care providers from both private as well as public sectors –

  • Hospitals
  • Nursing Homes

On a serious note, with or without NABH accreditation, health care providers have an ethical respect and responsibility to their patients. Hence, it is necessary to cater to the minimal requisite standards.


ISO is the international equivalent of NABH. Since, the ISO has been developing continuously in all areas and sectors, it become unavoidable for NABH to not integrate ISO with its policy any further. Thus, a hospital has to work hard to meet the requirements of the NABH as well as the ISO.

The Process of Accreditation

The most primary thing would be to review if the hospital’s services are in-keeping with the applicable standards of NABH and ISO. It would be impossible to give away an accreditation without the following very basic steps –

  1. Assessing the documents of the health care provider
  2. A research upon the credits of the health care provider
  3. Inspection of the health care provider

In order to get an NABH accreditation, one has to first acquaint themselves with the requisite standards and then carry out changes in-keeping with the requisite standards in their health care centre. Once this is done, a health care provider can go ahead and apply for an NABH accreditation. A small amount of fee has to be paid in order to get an accreditation.
